Five Social Media Marketing Myths

If you are thinking about using Social Media sites to promote your business, you may want to think twice. According to Gene Marks, many small businesses are finding that these tools just don't live up to the hype. Just because social networking is "in" does not mean that your customers are there. Gene exposed five social media marketing myths and truths in his recent article on businessweek.com:

1. Myth - Social media sites are free. Truth - Social media sites are not cheap because they take alot of your time to keep current.
2. Myth - Social media sites are a great place to find new customers. Truth - Social media sites are not necessarily the right place for small business owners to go online.
3. Myth - You need to be on all the big sites. Truth - Don't spread yourself too thin - just pick one and give it your all.
4. Myth - Social networking sites are for marketing. Truth - Social media sites are really best for providing quick and helpful customer service.
5. Myth - Social networking is the future. Truth - Less than 30% of the twitter users in a given month return the following month.

Remember that other approaches such as newsletters, phone calls, seminars, partnering, etc. may make more sense. If you are thinking of using Facebook or Twitter for you business then read more on the link below to Gene's article.
